Our Mission
Education is one of the most powerful tools for children and young teenagers, creating opportunity, and empowering individuals to support their families and communities. Our mission is to go to Malawi this August to build a school that creates lasting access to education for children who need it most.
Why Malawi?
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over 70% of Malawi’s population lives below the poverty line, limiting access. Nearly half of primary school students do not advance to secondary education. Only 4% of children graduate high school. Investing in education helps break the vicious cycles of poverty by giving these children more opportunities.
Our Team
dkstudio architects is a Toronto-based international design practice recognized for creating thoughtful, award-winning architecture that positively impacts communities and the human experience. Together with One Piece A Day, a global environmental movement inspiring small daily actions that create meaningful collective change, and buildOn, which has built more than 3,191 schools worldwide, our partnership brings together design expertise, community engagement, and global educational leadership to help build a school in Malawi that will create lasting impact for generations to come.
Our Goals
Alongside our partners, we've set a number of goals we are committed to accomplishing.
BuildOn Methodology
Our partner buildOn works directly with local communities, making community members active leaders in the school. buildOn provides engineering, materials, skilled labor, and project supervision, while the community contributes land, local materials, and volunteer labor. Each community must form a gender-equal leadership team and ensure that girls and boys attend school in equal numbers.
Both buildOn and the community sign a covenant that clearly outlines each side’s role and commitment.
